Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, on Thursday released a statement in response to an announcement by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta that the Department of Defense’ assignment policy changes regarding women in combat will be implemented May 14.
“I am proud to introduce the Women’s Fair and Equal Right to Military Service Act, which would allow female service members to fight in combat,” said Sanchez. “In actuality, this bill would officially recognize what is already happening on the battlefield – the fact that our military women are fighting in combat every day, all over the world.”
“Commanders should not have to worry about who they can or cannot assign to a unit, they should have the authority to place whomever they want in a unit as long as they are willing and capable of accomplishing the mission, regardless of gender. This language gives them the choice to assign freely without being worried about violating a restriction.
