County supervisors on Tuesday unanimously voted to revoke Orange Countyâ€™s Treasurer-Tax Collector Chriss Streetâ€™s authority to invest county funds. Supervisors said that while Street has done a good job as treasurer, the move was needed to prevent the public and investors from losing confidence in the countyâ€™s investment pool until Streetâ€™s term ends on Jan. 3, 2011.
Today the Orange County Board of Supervisors slammed Sheriff Sandra Hutchens over her reorganization plan announced last Friday. In that plan Sheriff Hutchens lays off 23 non-sworn personnel, while at the same time promoting 15 managers to fill vacancies in administrative ranks resulting from previous layoffs and retirements. While I will agree that spending $350,000 at a time of a major budget crisis and while we are laying off workers is ill advised and a bit out of sync with reality; I’m not sure that one out of four County Supervisors objecting really makes it a controversy.
After the Orange County Board of Supervisors failed to agendize proposed reforms requiring lobbyists to register and report on their activities to influence county government on matters of public interest, Senator Joe Dunn (ret.) spoke during Public Comments, noting he filed a notice to circulate a petition before the voters. Confident taxpayers want County government to operate with transparency and accountability, Dunn plans to lead an effort to gather the nearly 73,000 signatures required to place the reforms on the November 2010 ballot.
