While Costa Mesa CEO Tom Hatch is projecting a budget shortfall for next year of $5 million, Appointed Councilman Steve Mensigner is projecting that “the city is facing a $15 million deficit,” if the majority’s proposals are enacted.
Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer lied on national television Monday about the so called “need” to layoff 213 Costa Mesa city workers. Righeimer was interviewed on Fox News and was asked whether the decision to layoff employees was forced or a choice. He answered by claiming that the layoffs were necessary because the city pension liabilities awarded by previous contract agreements were unsustainable.
It seems that there is always some person involved in our local government process who thinks that they can dictate what happens. In this case in Costa Mesa it is Jim Righeimer, who couldn’t get elected as a dog-catcher if his life depended on it, who thinks he’s in charge.
A lot must happen for the city officials to meet that deadline, and right now they aren’t even close. Orange County, which at one point was Costa Mesa’s partner in the deal, has walked away.
