Even for people as cynical as we are, it’s possible for us to be amazed at the ability of elected officials to tell lies while stating facts. Anaheim Councilwoman Kris Murray provides us with an excellent demonstration of this skill.
Apparently an ad that calls out the only two responsible council members remaining who’s action to award a $158 million tax subsidy was voided by a judge because the issue was not properly noticed as required by the Brown Act violates the OC Register’s advertising sensibilities and hence its policy.
In a move that just about all of the attendees at the Special Meeting of the Anaheim City Council expected, the gang of three anti-democracy Council members killed two proposals for charter amendments on the November 2012 ballot.
We’re hoping that today’s special City Council meeting in Anaheim to decide whether to place two initiative proposals to amend the city charter on the November ballot doesn’t erupt into violent protests similar to those which disrupted a council meeting earlier this month. Mayor Tom Tait has set the meeting to be held at 4 p.m. in the Anaheim High School Cook Auditorium.
Dragging things out is the best option for the council majority and the worst for the voters of Anaheim. Even if the end result is a recommendation to establish districts, they can claim that holding a special election before the 2014 primary or general elections would be too expensive for a cash-strapped city.
In an email to the residents of the central Anaheim neighborhood known as the Colony, Anaheim Councilwoman Eastman wrote Tuesday night; “In spite of how it happened, it was a big time win for all who opposed seeing that placed on the November ballot, Tonight we celebrate a win with no shots fired!”
The Anaheim City Council will be discussing today the extension, for two years, of another giveaway of future Bed Tax revenue to a luxury hotel developer. According to the staff report, the developer could receive up to $44 million dollars in Bed Tax revenue over a 15-year period after the property opens.
