On Monday night, the Santa Ana City Council in a 5-0 decision, appointed Interim City Manager Paul Walters as City Manager. While the appointment of Walters was a foregone conclusion, Mayor Pulido still managed to trump public comment on the appointment.
Two weeks ago I was trying to figure out why 69th Assembly District candidate Michele Martinez wanted to change campaign finance law in the Santa Ana regarding campaign contributions. With the release of campaign finance reports for the most recent period, the picture has cleared up.
When I trekked out to Santa Ana on Saturday morning I planned on covering what had been billed as a recognition by the City of Santa Ana of the “Birthplace of the Vietnamese Community in Orange County” I didn’t expect to be attending a campaign rally.
For almost 16 months and after more than $25K spent on a no-bid contract with a management search consultant, we have been led to believe that there was an ongoing search for a new city attorney to join the ranks of Santa Ana city employees. Apparently, this was a ruse.
In large part due to the outsourcing of the Santa Ana Fire Department services to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), and amendments to employee contracts, Santa Ana’s financial picture is looking brighter than it was several months ago.
Santa Ana will continue to have fire protection after April 20, 2012, but the 128 years of the Santa Ana Fire Department history will come to an abrupt end. That is if the proposed outsourcing of fire services is approved at Tuesday nights meeting of the City Council.
A month and a half ago city officials in Santa Ana were crowing from the 8th floor of City hall about their fabulous ranking by Forbes as one of the most safest cities in the nation. On Friday, Forbes released another ranking which names Santa Ana. I’ve been digging through emails trying to find a press release from the city and I just can’t seem to find one.
