Just two days before the Orange County Registrar of Voters is expected to certify the results of the general election, and on the heels of his defiant proclamations after election night results showed his Charter Initiative doing down in flames, Costa Mesa Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer seems to be wanting to punt.
TheLiberalOC’s Managing Editor Dan Chmielewski was on Real Orange last facing off against conservatives Rick Reiff and Michael Capaldi. I got the feeling after watching the segment that Reiff and Capaldi weren’t expecting Dan to be prepared or as on target in his dismantling of their right-wing arguments.
After two public hearings and a couple of town halls, the Costa Mesa City Council has thus far failed to yield to overwhelming public comment opposing the rush to place an initiative to make Costa Mesa a charter city on the June ballot. The final vote to place Righeimer’s Charter Folly before the voters happens tonight.
Costa Mesa resident Tom Egan told the Council, “Giving you the power in this charter would be like giving a teenager the keys to the liquor cabinet and the keys to the car at the same time. You people without any grown up supervisor scares me.”
