Sanchez issues Statement on Afghanistan Agreement

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (CA-47), senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement in response to the partnership agreement today signed by President Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai to mark the beginning of the end of the war in Afghanistan.

“Afghan President Hamid Karzai has recently asserted that Afghanistan would side with Pakistan in a hypothetical war against the United States,” said Sanchez. “These comments are especially frustrating given the United States continues to invest endless amount of resources – including our young men and women – for the people of Afghanistan.”

“Commanders should not have to worry about who they can or cannot assign to a unit, they should have the authority to place whomever they want in a unit as long as they are willing and capable of accomplishing the mission, regardless of gender. This language gives them the choice to assign freely without being worried about violating a restriction.

Loretta Sanchez Votes to Withdraw Troops from Afghanistan

“My vote today is consistent with my opposition to the recent troop surge and reflects my belief that our current efforts in Afghanistan are ineffective, and that our troops and resources could be more effectively deployed elsewhere. It’s time for us to redirect our focus back home, where numerous challenges continue to burden families in my district and across the country. In good conscience, I cannot continue to support an expensive, protracted military conflict at a time when my district has double digit unemployment, skyrocketing foreclosure rates, and other issues that affect the quality of life of the people I represent.
