Moorlach’s outsourcing initiative proposal dies

At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting the proposal by lame-duck (chicken) Supervisor John Moorlach to place a ballot measure before the voters to authorize the Board to outsource county jobs on a whim failed to gain the needed support. Moorlach’s proposal received a second from Board Chairman Supervisor Shawn Nelson, but no support from the remaining members of the Board.

Irvine City Council Approves Great Park site for Veterans Cemetery

On Tuesday evening the Irvine City Council approved a 125 acre ARDA site at the Great Park for a Veteran’s Cemetery and Memorial with Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Lalloway seconding Council member Larry Agran’s motion. Mayor Steven Choi and Council member Christina Shea did manage to do a Five Point tap dance expressing concern about the city’s general fund and the cost of site clean up.

Loretta Sanchez Introduces Anti-Human Trafficking Legislation

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) has joined Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) as the lead Democrat in introducing the Human Trafficking Detection Act, H.R. 5116. This bill would require Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents responsible for monitoring travelers across U.S. borders and through airports receive training to identify potential victims of human trafficking and report these cases to local law enforcement officials.

For all the crowing that some people do about how Obamacare is an intrusion into our lives, the reality is that just providing access to health care insurance is not enough if, as a community, we want to address the increase in incidences of preventable chronic disease in our community. Health, is not a political issue, it is a community stability issue. The reduction of preventable chronic disease is a core function of our government’s job related to public health.
