Republicans Dale Cheema, who is a candidate for Irvine City Council, and Mark Newgent a candidate for the Irvine Unified School bard, have both failed a basic test of running for office in the Internet age — both did not protect their own names from being hijacked by political operatives.
If you go to www.dalecheema.com or www.marknewgent.com, you will discover websites aimed at taking both candidates down before election day. The same website own also took posesson of a domain address intending to hurt Mary Ann Gadio, but its not one a voter would find easily.
What this says is Cheema is a threat to Republican candidates running for Irvine City Council, and in Newgent’s case, he’s a threat to Betty Carroll, an NPP who has the backing of Irvine’s Republican establishment. Newgent recently had his support withdrawn from the OC GOP, which found video’s he’s posted on social media to be not to the party’s liking.
Its a hard lesson to learn, but if you’re even thinking about running for office, lock up for name for the website well before you decide.
