Julio Perez

Labor activist Julio Perez has secured the endorsement of the Orange County Vietnamese American Democratic Political Action Committee (VADPAC) on his bid for the AD-69 assembly seat.  VADPAC members are Democratic Political leaders in OC’s Little Saigon with a goal of recruiting Vietnamese candidates to run for office or supporting candidates who have the best interest of OC’s Vietnamese American community in mind.

Here’s the press release:

Vietnamese American Democratic PAC of Orange County Backs Julio Perez Endorsement is Critical to Get Out the Vote Efforts in Final Push Toward Victory

Garden Grove, CA – Boosting Julio Perez for Assembly’s get out the vote efforts, the Vietnamese American Democratic PAC of Orange County (VADPAC) today announced their support of Julio Perez for the 69th Assembly seat. VADPAC has played a crucial role in mobilizing voters in several recent legislative and Congressional races in Central Orange County.

“Through his leadership in creating and protecting local jobs and fighting for opportunities for our communities, Julio has earned our support, and more importantly, our trust,” said Do Phu Nguyen, chair of the Vietnamese American Democratic PAC. “Julio is the only candidate in this race who will stand up to the big corporate interests so we can invest in education and job training to get our state back on track.”

The Vietnamese American Democratic PAC (VADPAC) promotes the increased participation of Orange County’s Vietnamese community in the political process at the local, state and Federal levels. Its goal is to give voice and empower the community through political action and support candidates who embrace the mission and goals of VADPAC.

“I urge each and every member of our community to vote for Julio Perez,” Do Phu Nguyen added.  “When you compare the records of the candidates, Julio Perez is the only one who has demonstrated his commitment to our community by working with local business to create good-paying local jobs. ”

According to the latest Census data, the newly redrawn 69th Assembly District has a significant Asian population, with 17 percent of the total that are voting age. Julio also has been endorsed by State Board of Equalization Member Betty Yee, Garden Grove Unified School District Board Member Bao Nguyen, long-time community activist Alan Hing-Ying Woo and local businessman Phu Nguyen.

The VADPAC endorsement is crucial because it will help the Perez for Assembly campaign mobilize voters with in-language Vietnamese phone banking and neighborhood canvasses.   The primary election is June 5, 2012 and the general election is November 6, 2012.

Disclosure: I’m on the board for VADPAC as their communications chair but I abstain from the endorsement of candidates for office. I did not cast a vote for this race.

This seems like a pretty big endorsement for the Vietnamese vote in the 69th AD. Is it as significant as it sounds, Dan? This would seem to show that Michele’s attempt to purchase the vietnamese vote through trading City Proclamations for video ops did not go over well with Vietnamese leaders. Where does this place Ken Nguyen?

Its a big deal. Michele cast her lot with Van Tran in Little Saigon when there’s this growing movement of Democrats there. The Vietnamese voters do get out and vote. I have no idea about any other endorsements; I don’t participate in this aspect of the group.

Julio still has an uphill battle. Getting this endorsement will help a lot but I doubt if it will be enough to carry him to victory. Way too much baggage for a newbie.

But … but … but … Michele was interviewed by Van Tran!

Julio went on the TV show that serves as the Democratic Response to the Van Tran show.
