Advertisers Flee the Rush Limbaugh Show

In the wake of his insult to Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, pressure from the public has caused more than 40 advertisers to bolt from sponsoring The Rush Limbaugh Program, which airs in Southern California on KFI radio.  Think Progress, monitoring the program last week, counts 70 sexist rants here.  Update: Media Matters says 50 advertisers are out; Today’s program was mostly Public Service Announcements.

Here’s a quick snapshot of sponsors no longer asscoiated with an “entertainer with talent on loan from God” —  Quicken Loans; Sleep Number; The Sleep Train; Legal Zoom; Citrix; GoToMeeting; Carbonite; Pro Flowers; AOL; Vitacost; Tax Resolution Services; Allstate; Heart & Body Extract; Bonobos; Sears; Oreck Vacuum Cleaners; Sensa Weight Loss; Good Will; Apple Vacations; Kmart; Bare Escentuals; Century 21; Deere & Co.; Mission Pharmacal; Mid-West Life Insurance; Hadeed Carpet; Polycom; ServiceMagic; ThompsonCreekWindows; Dr. Rob & Dr. Deb; StVincents MedCenter; Cascades Dental; Netflix; AccuQuote life insurance; Stamps.com; Philadelphia Orchestra; Bethesda Sedation Dentistry; BareMinerals; Downeast Energy; Capitol One; Matrix Direct; Reputation Rhino.

Fanscinating to watch the free market at work.  No one here will deny El Rushbo his First Amendment Rights, but there’s such a thing as responsible speech and even Limbaugh’s “apology” wasn’t all that apologetic.

The IB Times has a terrific post with Limbaugh quotes about feminism and racism.

On feminism, Feb. 2010. “Oh, I’m a huge supporter of women. What I’m not a supporter of is liberalism. Feminism is what I oppose and feminism had led women astray. I love women. I don’t know where all this got started. I love the women’s movement, especially when walking behind it.”

Pondering why less than 40 percent of women had a favorable opinion of him, Feb. 2009. “I want some of these women to start telling me what it is I must do to close the gender gap or, if not, what it is I must do to close the gender gap, what it is I’ve done that has caused the gender gap; assuming the gender gap is true and that the poll is true … I own the men, and what must I do now to own women?”

Why women support Hillary Clinton, April 2008. “You have to understand the mindset of a lot of these feminists and women… these women have paid their dues. They’ve been married two or three times; they’ve had two or three abortions; they’ve done everything that feminsim can ask them to do.”

On why he’s proud to be a male chauvinist, April 2004. “We’re not sexists, we’re chavinists — we’re male chauvinist pigs and we’re happy to be because we think that’s what men were destined to be. We think that’s what women want.”

On his “pet name” for the National Organization for Women (NOW): “The National Association of Gals (NAG.) Limbaugh then claimed the organization is run by “militant feminists” who need to realize they “aren’t determining who wins elections. White men are.”

The real trick is for activists to conitnue pressuring Limbaugh’s remaining advertisers and any new ones that emerge.  This pressure should also apply to local advertising on KFI radio and the advertisers that the station slots during the Limbaugh program.  Economics can triumph over hate.

Saw these quotes on another blog.

Bill Maher: “Sarah Palin is a stupid twat”

Ed Shultz: “Laura Ingraham is a right-wing slut.”

Keith Olbermann: “Michelle Malkin is a mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it.”

David Letterman: “Sarah Palin dresses like a slutty flight attendant.”

Anyone remember if the outrage over these quotes reached the same Rush to condemn as the current one?

  2. March 7, 2012 at 7:16 pm

BillMaher has no sponsors and requires a subscription to view.

Ed Schultz was suspended and issued a sincere apology.

    Keith Olbermann left MSNBC.

David Letterman issued an apology to the Palin’s for that comment and one about one of her daughters being an unwed mother.

Sio by all means, boycott CBS and MSNBC.

And then again, John McCain used to say Chelsea Clinton was so ugly because Janet Reno was her father. There are lots more from the right if you want to go there

Didn’t Limbaugh apologize? Why does Schultz and Letterman gain forgiveness from you after the apology and not Rush for his?

Did President Obama call Sarah Palin after Maher’s comment and did he condemn him for saying it?

Will Obama return, refuse or refute the $1 Million PAC contribution from Maher for his offensive comments about women?

BTW- it isn’t a contest of who said what but about consistent reactions of outrage at anyone who uses such offensive language. Surprised a liberal misses that point.

  4. March 7, 2012 at 11:18 pm

You call Limbaugh’s comments an apology? Please. It was one of the “I’m sorry if you were offended” remarks. Actually, the point isn’t lost on me at all. Look at the Palin camps reaction to “Game Change” as a work of fiction even though they haven’t seen the film yet. Mahar gave to a PAC that doesn’t coordinate with the president’s re-election campaign. And Palin has all the airtime she needs to refudiate anything Mahar said. Do you read any of Ann Coulter’s work? How about Michelle Malikin?

Most conservative Republican excuse Limbaugh as an “entertainer” so I’ll lump Mahar, Letterman and Schultz into that category. The difference between Limbaugh and the other three — Democratic elected don’t bow to kiss their rings like Republicansdo with Limbaugh

Rush’s “apology” was the most BS apology ever. For one thing, he went on about Fluke’s sex life for days. It was nothing like the quick short outburst Ed Schultz had and immediately sincerely apologized for. (Which this guy quotes wrong anyhow, it wasn’t “Laura Ingraham is a right-wing slut,” it was “and then whatshername, you know, that right-wing slut…Laura Ingraham…”

Rush made it clear that he was apologizing for his “language”, for “only two words” which would be slut and prostitute. The basic idea that Fluke was asking to be paid for having sex (when her testimony, which he never heard, was about the medical necessity of the pill) – that basic idea that Americans were paying her to have sex was apparently perfectly fine, if he just coulda got it across without using the words slut and prostitute.

Also apparently fine and not apologized for – his demand that he and the nation get to watch Sandra Fluke have sex online since we’re all paying for it. His saying that she’s “having so much sex” that “her boyfriends are lined up around the block” and “her parents should be ashamed of her.” He didn’t apologize for any of that, just two words.

And then the next day, his apology became that “he had descended to the level of the left.” And then he started whining that “rappers say worse things all the time.” What a joke. Let’s get him off Armed Forces Radio. We taxpayers shouldn’t be paying to make our troops listen to his porn fantasies.

Can we cleanse NPR and Public Television while we’re at it?

I was kinda thinking that if you cancel Rush and I get to cancel Moyers.

Now that they’re gone, you start the next round.

Actually, in re-thinking the above…because Rush is SO HUGE, I think that I should be able to have fair value on my side.

So, I’ll take off NPR completely.

Now that we’re even, you go next.

Hey Boyz, what da ya think about the media reports that Rush just said “SEE YA” to Sleep Train after they asked to re-start advertising on his show?

I’d say the unemployment situation under the Obama Administration just increased.

Thanks to Rush, it also might make room for some Occupy’er to get a job in advertising!

            Sweet!

Get a job; repeal obamacare; pay for your own birth control; shut up and study law; have a nice day!

There have been significant benefits to Americans as a result of HealthCare reform. Since you are in the advice given mode, read some books, get informed, and stop being so ignorant.

    Ouch, that left a mark!

I guess I’ll head off to the Doctor’s office where I will present my health insurance card, pay the deductable in cash and get treated for the bruise.

I must be ignorant and not “progressive” because I accept the premise that I get to choose and pay for my own health care needs.

  7. March 9, 2012 at 4:01 pm

And HealthCare Reform did nothing to change that.

from PolitiFact, a non partisan website that does Fact Checking:

    1. The plan is not a government takeover of health care like in Canada or Britain. The government will not take over hospitals or other privately run health care businesses. Doctors will not become government employees, like in Britain. And the U.S. government intends to help people buy insurance from private insurance companies, not pay all the bills like the single-payer system in Canada. *****The key parts of the current U.S. system — employer-provided insurance, Medicare for the elderly, Medicaid for the poor — would stay in place.***** The government would create health insurance exchanges for people who have to buy insurance on their own, so they could more easily compare plans and prices

Testimony to the Senate Budget Committee as reported on Real Clear Politics Blog (John Hayward):

“In the course of a few minutes, Sebelius – who will become one of the most powerful officials on Earth, once ObamaCare is fully up and running – concedes that ObamaCare’s funding mechanisms are collapsing, its costs are ballooning out of control, and it has driven the cost of insurance for American families up instead of reducing them, and she has absolutely no idea what it’s going to do to the federal budget deficit.”

Who exactly will pay for that government mandated FREE birth control provided to a 30 year old law student at a private university?

      • March 9, 2012 at 10:48 pm

CBo reports repealing healthcare reform will add $230 billion to the deficit

FREE birth control for a 30-year old law student is FREE the same way cash from an ATM seems like FREE money to your kids.

Tax breaks for high profitable oil companies while gas prices driven up by speculation. Tax dollars spent on an illegal and unjust war.

Care to defend Limbaugh’s speech for demanding to she her sex videos online?

From the CBO via PowerLine Blog: ” Green Energy Gets The Most From Taxpayers”:

“Although tax preferences for fossil fuels continued to make up the bulk of all energy-related tax incentives through 2007, by the end of 2008, fossil fuels accounted for only a third of the total cost of energy-related tax incentives.”

As the authors say, “get rid of all subsidies and the oil companies won’t even notice.”

Did you happen to notice the harm to the shareholders of Carbonite that has taken place since they dropped Rush?

Customers are voting with their feet – as they say.

Why, because RUSH was their BIGGEST advertising audience.

PS: Occupy Wall Street announced they will be OUT of money by the end of the month — except they will still have limited funds available for bail.

              Gotta go.

              • March 10, 2012 at 10:43 am

Taxpayers should invest in renewable energy to lessen dependence on foreign oil.

If Carbonite shareholders are concerned, they can take it up with mgmt. I suspect Carbonite dropped Rush due to cancellations of their service. Management reacts to customer demand first.

Your defense of a sexist bigoted “entertainer” speaks volumes about your character.

          • March 12, 2012 at 9:34 am

I wanted to point out a major factual error in your argument about free birth control argued for that 30 year old law student. The health plan for students at Georgetown University is compleetly paid for by the students. As paying customers for this health insurance, the students were asking for birth control to be covered as a preventive health measure. The taxpayers don’t pay a dime. Students, however, do. Just because its offered doesn’t mean every student will or can take advantage of this particular benefit. So it’s not FREE no matter how many times you capitalize it.
