Earlier this week, conservative communicator Jim Bieber and I argued about the angry rhetoric in conservative media and the Fairness Doctrine in the wake of the Tuscon shooting.
Jim wrote in one of his comments: “It’s just silly to make the argument that conservatives dominate with the volume and level of meanness of angry rhetoric….according to current liberal doctrine they (liberals who said nasty things about talker Rush Limbaugh) and their speech can be held responsible if someone does gun me down.”
Limbaugh mocked the speech of visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao complete with references of “ching chong ching chong.” Limbaugh even applauded his “translation” and likened it to comedian Sid Caesar’s impressions of foreigners on “Your Show of Shows” from American’s politically incorrect 1950s. And this poor attempt at what must pass for comedy among conservatives has created a strong reaction from Asian-Americans across the nation.
In particular, California state Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) has called for Limbaugh to apologize for what many Americans see as racist remarks against the Chinese (who know, from the country that holds most of the US debt run up during the Bush Administration). For Yee’s complaints, his office received death threats in the form of voice mails and a fax:
“Fish Head Leeland Yee. Rush Limbaugh will kick your Chink ass and expose you for the fool you are,†and “Without exceptions, Marxists are enemies of the United States Constitution! Death to all Marxists! Foreign and Domestic!â€
In a statement, Yee said: “It is quite disturbing that such racist sentiment still exists in our country. As I have said in the past, it is unfortunate acts like these that demonstrate why we must continue to be vigilant against hate and intolerance. Such vitriol has no place within our political discourse or anywhere in our society.â€
Limbaugh has a long history of making racially and insensitive comments and attacks on Liberals. Who could forget his imitation of Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s symptoms during the 2008 election cycle. There are also some racists statements attributed to Limbaugh that are not verified, so click the link above for a documented list from Media Matters. But my point that listeners are taking action based on the words uttered by people like Rush Limabugh is happening. Glenn Beck has the same ability to spurn listeners to attack his targets too.
Yee is calling on Americans to boycott advertisers of Limbaugh’s program. The Huffington Post offered this partial list of sponsors. If your a customer, find someone else and write the company to explain why you’ll no longer use their product or service:

I’d like to see this go to the next step; Limbaugh should invite Yee on his program and apologize to Chinese Americans for his poor attempt at comedy.
