Harriett Wieder, first woman elected as OC Supervisor, dies at 89

The Orange County Register reported Monday night that former Second District Supervisor Harriet M. Wieder has died. She was 89 years old.

Wieder was elected to the Huntington Beach City Council in 1973 and became Mayor in 1976. In 1978 Wieder became the first woman elected as a Supervisor in Orange County. She served on the Board from 1979 to 1995.

The Chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors, First District Supervisor Janet Nguyen, confirmed Wieder’s passing to the Orange County Register on Monday.

“She’s had such an impact in Orange County that what she did still affects what we do on this board,” Nguyen said. “Though it’s been more than a decade since Wieder left the board, her institutional knowledge of Orange County has been a valuable asset to the board,” Nguyen said.
