We contacted Irvine City Council member Beth Krom regarding Steve Choi’s antics at Friday night’s Harry S Truman Award Dinner. This is what she had to say:
“When I was the Mayor of Irvine and then President Bush came to Irvine, I attended his speech and showed respect for the President, despite the many misgivings I had about his policies. We who are privileged to hold public office have an obligation to hold ourselves to a higher standard when it comes to how we comport ourselves in public. At least that has always been my perspective.â€
“To see Councilmember Choi parading around the lobby of the Hilton Hotel with a picture depicting Speaker Pelosi as Josef Stalin on his back was deeply disturbing, though sadly not out of character. Worse still, he posed with protestors who had images of the Speaker and the President as Nazis. To defend such actions as an appropriate expression of his republican values speaks to his caustic nature and indifference to the diverse community he represents.â€
