Yes, the Brown Shirts did shut down rival unions and harass Internation socialists. They hated rivals for the working class- just like today's labor unions hate rival unions in the same industry (dual unionism shifts power to greedy management!).

But it was the Brown Shirts (as opposed to the rival SS) that was drew mainly left-leaning "working class" thugs led by unabashed Homosexual Ernst Rohm and his cadre of radical-Left gays who planned to sieze the party back from Hitler and put the "socialism" back into National Socialism (but leave the war-mongering, anti-Semite, anti-Bourgeois, anti-traditionalist planks in the party).
