In a nutshell it looks like the California GOP Vice-Chair Jon Fleischman is up to his eyeballs in the “Open Mike†Duvall sex talk scandal.  Back in 2007 Fleischman’s wife Maureen worked for Mike Duvall on his Assembly staff.  Sources tell us she was let go for having an attitude problem. We are hearing it was something along the lines of a “do you know who I am†attitude that was the problem. At any rate, she no longer worked for Duvall and hence the cause of Fleischman’s dislike for Duvall that he expressed to the Register’s Brian Joseph yesterday.
From what we have been able to piece together, Assemblyman Jeff Miller was aware of Fleischman’s disdain for Duvall and figured he could use the information he had about his conversation with Duvall in the now infamous Assembly Appropriations Committee room to get Mike Schroeder to back off on support to fight the recall effort against him. Looks like that plan didn’t work too well for Miller so the story ended up leaking to R. Scott Moxley of the OC Weekly and Dave Lopez from KCAL.
On second thought, after being corrected about Schroeder’s connection to the recall (thanks Matt, it’s really difficult to keep track of who’s back Schroeder has his knife in from day to day) against Miller, it is probable that the leak could have been made by Miller or Fleischman. But it is clear to us that Fleischman was aware that the story had been leaked to other media and he sat on the information in order to orchestrate the uncharacteristically unified and instantaneous demands that Duvall resign when the story broke. Usually Republicans stand behind their disgraced politicians until the very last moment; Mike Carona, Fleischman’s former boss being a shining example.
While Fleischman may “live for the scoop†in his FlashReport life, he lives for the power in his GOP life. In this case power and revenge took control and Mike Duvall was just another casualty of war.
Fleischman and Schroeder may get two birds out of this one scandal. Jeff Miller, already in hot water and facing a recall, now has the additional baggage of being a member of the Assembly Ethics Committee and not reporting the inappropriate conduct of Mike Duvall. Not a good move for someone fighting to keep their seat against an attack from within his own party.
