Arnold Schwarzenegger says Democrats are wasting time on flawed budget plans
The California governor says he will veto the Legislature-approved package, which includes tax hikes. The state is days away from having to issue IOUs.
By Shane Goldmacher, Reporting from Sacramento — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today scolded Democrats for squandering time holding legislative votes on budget solutions that face certain veto, with the state days away from having to issue IOUs.
“They are wasting time by going through this drill,” the governor told reporters in his office this morning. “Why run out of time, and then all of a sudden we have to hand out IOUs?”
The governor’s comments followed the Assembly’s approval late Sunday night of proposals to balance the budget with the help of higher taxes. Democratic leaders used a series of legal maneuvers to push the levies through without any GOP votes. The state Senate approved the tax package today.
