On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors wants to take away money for tracking children’s immunizations. Â Agenda item 21 is to pull funding from Planned Parenthood for registering children into the State Immunization Registry.
The children’s immunization registry funding was available only to providers of Womens, Infants, and Children’s (WIC) Programs. Â 4 agencies in Orange County provide WIC services – County of Orange, Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Camino Health Center and Planned Parenthood/Orange and San Bernardino Counties. Â
Currently, only the County of Orange and Planned Parenthood participate in the program to register children’s immunizations. Â When parents come in for nutrition counseling, they are asked to bring the immunization records for their children. The information is entered into the state database. Â If the children are not current with immunizations, the parents are given info on where to take their children for treatment. Â When the family moves, the records are still available, which helps to provide continuity of care.
The Supervisors want to cut funding for this program. Â Apparently, they haven’t heard the news yet that childhood immunizations are a very cost effective way to maintain public health. Â Please contact your Supervisor. Â Have your neighbors, friends, doctors, nurses, and enemies contact their Supervisors, if for no other reason than to prevent the public health problems caused by missing immunizations. Â
Now, if we could immunize the Supervisors against pettiness……
