The New Republican Holiday

September 10, 2007
By

I remember one of Ronald Reagan’s speeches, where he said “We (Republicans) see every day as if it’s the Fourth of July.  Democrats see every day as April 15th.”  Just one more reason why I never cared for Ronaldn Reagan as president even though I admire his sense of optimism about this country.  This optimism has long been absent from the current GOP leadership.

But tomorrow is the sixth anniversary of the Terrorism Attacks of 9/11 and I am frankly tired of the Republican Mantra that only Republicans can keep us safe from terrorism and terrorist attacks.  I have said before, the only idea Republicans have left to sell is fear.  By keeping us afraid and positioning Democrats as unable or unwilling to defend America, they are using fear to hold onto power and will use any election in their favor as a rationale that voters support their entire platform.  This notion is not true.

I hear often that 9/11 changed everything.

It didn’t change our Constitution.  But it did change the way Republicans perceive our Constitution, which is why we have our own government spying on our phone calls, Internet messages, and library book withdrawls. And if you weren’t with the Republican leadership, you were with the terrorists.  Then they politicized the 9/11 tragedies to push their entire adgenda forward.

So after six years, here is what we have:

Osama Bin Laden is still at Large.

We invaded a nation that didn’t attack us on 9/11 and we are bogged down in a quagmire of a Religious civil war.

Members of the executive branch of the Bush administration outed a covert miliary operative during a time of war.

Al Qaeda has largely reconstituted itself with the same terrorism capabilities as they had on 9/10/2001.

There are more, not fewer terrorists in Iraq since the invasion.

The recommendations of the bi-partisan 9/11 commission have not yet been implemented.

Our borders and ports remain largely unguarded and suspectable to a terrorist attack.

Repeated calls from the president and other administration officials remind us to remember the lessons of September the 11th while not adhearing to the advice set forth by the 9/11 Commission.

So explain to me again, why Republicans are supposed to be better suited to protect Americans from terrorism that anyone else?

The Republicans let this happen. If the votes had been counted and we had an elected and competent president, a man who would listen to those smarty pants “intelligence” people, no attack would have occurred. Wait 30 years and all this will be accepted wisdom, but only if we can get the REDS out of power. The REDS have re-written history to hide their incompetence.
