I’m pretty disappointed to see that the Californians United PAC is funding Otto Bade mailers. The story unfolded yesterday on the
Total Buzz Blog, and was written about in the
Los Angeles Times this morning.
Orange County Democrats were in a good place…we’ve taken the moral high ground on a lot of issues lately. Republican Tan Nguyen is a racist. Republicans hired crooks to bolster voter registration numbers. Democrats were on the right side of the issues.
But this IE stuff makes Correa look bad. Sure, IE’s are independent, and Correa can’t control what they do. But we all know what it looks like.
Going through
expenditures, you can see that this is the work of Don Perata (who recruited Lou for this race) and Sandy Polka (she who brought us all of the lovely Claudia Alvarez campaign literature).
Nothing nice to say here, so I’ll refrain.

In the past week, we’ve all watched the Republican Party throw Tan Nguyen under the bus and distance themselves from Nguyen’s campaign and the illegal letter sent to legal residents.
A certain photo keeps showing up in the Vietnamese press, and I kept hearing about it, but it wasn’t until last weekend that I finally got my hands on a copy:
From left to right: Truong Diep (Midway City Sanitary District), Tri Ta (City Council of Westminster), Trung Nguyen (Orange County Water District, Div. 1), Dina Nguyen (City Council of Garden Grove), Andy Quach (City Council of Westminster), Van Tran (State Assembly, 68th District), Tan Nguyen (Congressional District 47th), Lan Nguyen (Garden Grove Unified School District).
The photo shows 8 Republican candidates standing together, and the text of the ad says something about being united—the exact translation is a little fuzzy for me still, at this time.
One of those candidates is the now famously stupid Tan Nguyen.
This photo, which has now been dubbed by some as “Tan and the 7 dopes,” was part of a combined campaign to use synergy to bring success to all of the 8 Vietnamese-American candidates.
These 8 have been standing together in photos; they’ve been pooling their money for advertisements; they’ve been making joint appearances.
So my question is this: if these 7 have put their names behind Tan Nguyen, and he turns out to be a crook and thug, what (if anything) does it say about them? Should we think less of these 7 because of their previous support for Tan Nguyen?

In the beginning of September I wrote about the Young Democrats of America partnering up with the California Young Democrats to bring a non-traditional voter registration drive to Orange County. Read my original post about the topic
here.
Well it looks like the campaign has been pretty successful, but ask again on November 8
th.
As of today, they have knocked on the doors of 5,000 young voters and they have talked to young people and convinced them to register to vote.
But Election Day is still 2 weeks away, and they are looking for young volunteers to help them contact voters, make door hangers, scan data, and other campaign work.
If you can come in and volunteer some time, contact Tim Steed:

You’ll read it time and again in the
Orange County Register. They don’t endorse specific candidates for specific office. And while that’s true, it’s not accurate.
The Register’s editorial writers and a number of columnists and certainly their local editorial cartoonist routinely fall back to old line positions and prejudices on liberals, progressives and Democrats. We’re leftists, socialists, and
liberal (say it like you might hear someone use a racial slur). Their criticism of the Governor is that he is “too liberal” and embraces a leftist position (like that’s a criticism or something).
Its the sort of bias that routinely comes through in column after column, in blog entry after blog entry. But I usually say most conservatives have no problem with media bias as long as its conservative media bias.
It is true the
Register doesn’t endorse specific canddiates. But they certainly make it clear which political ideaology is not acceptable to them and whcih candidates embrace that particular ideaology. They also endorse candidates based on what doesn’t run in the paper. The wonderful thing about having a two paper town is to see how radically different some stories are treated from an editorial perspective and from where they are on the page or in the paper (if its a story that’s negative about a Republican, chances are its inside…).
I personally think the
Register should drop the pretense of objectivity and simply endorse– by name — those candidates that they endorse via innuendo; that, or hire a coupe of liberal columnists to at least play lip service to the growing number of progressives and Democrats in the market. But with budget cuts and possible layoffs looming, new hires at the
Register will be rare.

The Lou Correa camp sent out a “Republicans for Lou” letter this weekend. The letter is a counter to the Dems for Daucher letter that
Andrew and
Claudio already blogged about.
And similarly, Lou’s letter is signed by a bunch of Who-dats? of the Republican party: David Shawver, Tran Tu, Al Ethans, George Georgieff, Mark Kusiak, Jess Saenz, and Hoa Truong.
From the letter:
Although we’re all registered Republicans, none of us are voting for “Republican” Lynn Daucher for State Senate.
Lynn Daucher isn’t even from our area. She just moved here from up North and rented a place so she could run for office.
And, frankly, she’s not like us at all.
An interesting P.S. to this letter is about taxes. The writers claim that Lou won’t support any tax increase that doesn’t have voter approval, and he includes a letter that Lynn Daucher wrote and signed when the Mayor of Brea. The letter (a PDF is available
HERE) is written by Daucher fighting (successfully, I might add) to keep the vehicle license fee in place.

Last night I had the opportunity to attend the VFL-IOS first annual general assembly dinner in Westminster.
Much of the evening was in Vietnamese, so I didn’t get too much out of the speakers and presenters. In fact, up until dinner, the highlight of the evening was a tall, lanky guy with an Amish-like beard trying to close the ceiling vent above him with a beer bottle.
Jim Brandt, Mike Glover, Paul Lucas and a few other local candidates spoke about the importance of protecting Vietnamese workers, and their support for the VFL-IOS.
I also had a nice chat with a Westminster School Board Candidate Mary Mangold about the Our Children, Our Vote Coalition, and the misinformation that they’ve been putting out. Mary has promised to email some more information to me, so look out for a post soon.

You may have noticed that the look of our website is a little different.
Yesterday I made the switch from Blogger to Wordpress, and we are still working a few kinks out. In the past week we’ve had so many problems with the Blogger service that we decided that we’d be better off running independently with a service like Wordpress.
Some new things that we haven’t been able to do before include:
- Categorized posts
- Comment moderation is easier (although there are no plans to ban anonymous posts)
- Split posts so that readers can read the beginning of a post, and click a “read more” link if they wish to continue
- Easier photo uploading for our bloggers

I found this letter on Time’s website and it’s amazing in its clarity about what’s going on in Iraq by a solider stationed there. I hate this war, but I’m proud of the men and women serving it.
I don’t have permission to reprint in whole or in part, but here’s the
link. Read it, if you’re brave enough.
A payback: Bill O’Relly gets slammed.
