Captain America lives again

In the 2-1/2 years since Marvel Comics killed off Captain America (actually Steve Rogers), the replacement Captain America just isn’t cutting it for me (guns and a shield); with ComicCon right around the corner, Steve Rogers rises from the dead to be Captain America reborn.  I expect to see lots of new Captain America stuff at ComicCon in San Diego in exactly 3 weeks.

A Fair and Balanced Armed Forces Radio Network

We have a Democratic president, 60 Democratic senators (ok 58, with 2 independents who side with Dems) and a majority in Congress.

So why is windbag Rush Limbaugh the only talk show host on Armed Forces Radio?

We don’t need a Fairness Doctrine to do one of two things; dump Rush or add a progressive talk show host (someone like Thom Hartmann, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow or even Ron Reagan would be great.  Randy Rhodes, unlike Rush, actually served in the Armed Forces.  Senator Al Franken actually made more trips to Iraq than Rush or George W. Bush.

The New Attack on Democracy: What the Founders Knew But We’ve Forgotten

One of the foundational principles of American democracy is under attack.

When the nation’s Founders crafted the United States Constitution in 1787, they were careful to include a requirement that:

“The Senators and Representatives shall receive a compensation for their services, to be ascertained by law, and paid out of the treasury of the United States.” (Art I, Sec. 6, Clause 1).

A similar provision for compensation applies to the president:

“The President shall, at stated Times, receive for his Services, a Compensation, which shall neither be increased nor diminished during the Period for which he shall have been elected, and he shall not receive within that Period any other Emolument from the United States, or any of them.” (Art II, Sec. 1, Clause 7).

Franken Victory Sends Fox News Hosts Over The Edge

From MediaMatters.org:

After Norm Coleman conceded the 2008 Minnesota Senate race to Al Franken (D), several Fox News hosts expressed bewilderment, disappointment, and denial about the outcome. For instance, Glenn Beck said of Franken’s victory, “[I]t shows how crazy our country has gone.” He added: “[I]t shows that we’ve lost our minds.” Sean Hannity claimed that Franken is “not all there,” and later claimed, “I, in my heart of hearts, do not believe that Al Franken won that election.” And Brian Kilmeade said he’s “in denial” about Franken, who he said was “barely sane.” Gretchen Carlson responded to Kilmeade by again falsely claiming that Coleman “won in the original election.”

As Media Matters for America has documented, Fox News personalities have repeatedly promoted baseless claims of fraud in the Minnesota race and claimed that there was a lack of impartiality in the recount process to accuse Franken of “stealing” the election. However, in its unanimous 5-0 ruling, the Minnesota Supreme Court stated that “[n]o claim of fraud in the election or during the recount was made by either party” and that “Coleman’s counsel confirmed at oral argument that Coleman makes no claim of fraud on the part of either voters or election officials.” The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that experts said there was a “lack of crookedness in the election” and that Loyola Law School election law professor Rick Hasen “said the court’s ruling Tuesday was so thorough that it also ruled out the possibility that either candidate — or their lawyers — could be accused of stealing the election.” Read more of Fox hosts on Franken victory.

National Discussion on Health Care Reform with President Obama

On July 1st, President Obama held a town hall meeting on Health Care Reform. After days of taking video questions online, and with massive online discussions unfolding during the event, the President took questions on health reform directly from the public in an online town hall.  Below is the complete video of that event.

Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Shea/Choi on Great Park CEO Search

An interesting opinion by an appeals court judge, which basically says that two parties who settle a dispute one of those parties is entitled to reimbursement of legal fees.  Huh?  I think the decision should be appealed because it frankly discourages settlements and encourages more costly litigation through the courts.

From Sean Emery’s story in today’s paper:

The trial court last year found that the Great Park Corporation didn’t have to pay attorney’s fees, arguing that there was no “prevailing party” in the lawsuit. But the 4th District Court of Appeal overturned that decision, with Justice William Rylaarsdam arguing that “there was not a whit of evidence” that the Great Park Corporation “would have made the documents available if (the lawsuit) had not been filed.”

“I think it absolutely vindicates in the public the necessity and value of the litigation that Steven and Christina were required to file,” said Ben Pugh, who represented Shea and Choi. “It also rebukes the political mailers and the spin sent out after the trial court ruling that this was totally unnecessary, that it was a political battle.” Read More…

12 Years Later…

Today, I — very reluctantly – cancelled my subscription to the OC Register.

I love newspapers.  I truly do.

But there’s a mindset on Grand Avenue that refuses to acknowledge the 500,000 registered Democrats in this county, many of them proud liberals, by continuing to use nothing but conservative and liberatian columnists in the editorial/opinion pages.  And despite the space limitations one writer mentioned to me at the FreedomPolitics blog launch, well, we Liberals get no love online either.

It’s high time the Register considers the half-million of us in this county instead of the 80,000 registered Libertarians in the state.

A newspaper needs to reflect the values of the community it serves.  The New York Times has conservative columnists.  Newsweek has conservative columnists.  The LA Times has conservative columnists.  The Wall Street Journal runs liberal columns regularly.  I understand the Register has a right-center voice, but when the only bone thrown to those with a center-left view is a “Reader Rebuttal,” its time to move on.

Freedom isn’t just defined by how little taxes you pay or how involved government is in our daily lives.  I can define what freedom is to me without the Register’s help.
